Laboratory animal resource center ethical policy

In accordance with the Treaty of Amsterdam, we consider the animals sentience  and we are deeply committed to providing responsible, humane care for our research animals. SPR LAR  goal  is becoming a national model for animal research and care, where Responsibility and 3Rs principles are applied by:

  • Providing the best  quality care for our animals. Facilities are in place to keep free of disease unique animal models, IVC caging system environmental enrichment and competent day to day care are provided to respect the animal welfare.
  • Applying the 3R’s (replacement, reduction, refinement) principles.
  • Considering  Refinement  as a central principle of all scientific experimentation and adopting the last definition and approach of refinement principle like “ Any approach which avoids, alleviates or minimises the actual or potential pain, distress and other adverse effects suffered at any time during the life of the animals involved, or which enhances their wellbeing as far as possible” (Anim.Al.See, 2004). Also considering that there is evidence that “ Refinement “ not only benefits animals, but also improves the quality of  research findings. All scientists aim to refine the methods they use in order to get more accurate results as quickly and cost-effectively as possible from fewer experiments.
  • Reviewing studies using animals in accordance with the Directive 86/609 EEC, Amsterdam protocol on animal protection and welfare, and national regulation, SPR  considers  the “Replacement” of animals  with alternatives to the animals whenever possible
  • Reducing the number of animals , limiting the use at the  necessary number to obtain statistically significant results.
  • Adopting a policy of zero tolerance for any employee who mistreats animals or violates approved protocols and standards.
  • Establishing and maintaining trust with the communities we serve.
  • Animal research is highly regulated at national and international level and SPR is committed to full compliance with all national regional and local laws and regulations. Everyone involved in the use of animals in research at SPR must receive the approval of the local Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, which includes researchers, physicians, veterinarians and members of the public. Beyond what laws and regulations dictate, we recognize that laboratory animals are living creatures that deserve to be treated with care and compassion. We are committed to ensuring the well-being of our animals and to maximizing their comfort and welfare. We understand the issue of animal research and care is complex. It’s a responsibility we take very seriously.
